My Argumentative Essay :)

The government has the most responsibility for improving our environment. Do you agree? Support with reasons and examples.

Since the turn of the new century, humans have generally come up with a lot of “creative” ideas to upgrade their lives to better lifestyles without any concern to the environment. In order to meet their demanding requirements, they destruct rainforest to build various types of factories, they invent different technologies that are not environment-friendly and so much of development in upgrading their lives until the negative impact to the environment is negligible. Although mass media often shows concerns to the environmental issues, there is no realistic action done among the residents in our Mother earth. As the saying goes, a thousand miles begin with one step, hence there should be a party who takes the first step into raising the public’s awareness to the devastating environmental issues. Therefore, I completely disagree that the government bears the most responsibility for improving the environment due to several factors. Instead of the government, it is the business sector who plays a major role in improving the environment and has a magnitude of influence in encouraging the public to live a greener lifestyle.

The business sector takes the initiatives and overtakes the role played by the government, it consequently exposes the public into realising several ways that can be measured to improve the environment. In order to encourage the consumers to go green, the business sector has especially launched “Go Green” activity in the public supermarkets which must first approved by the government. For instance, Tesco store in Malaysia has introduced a range of carrier bags to help customers use lesser carrier bags when they shop. Alternatively, Tesco also rewards the customers with Tesco Green Clubcard points each time they use their own bag or the Tesco reusable bags. The points collected for an individual can get Clubcard voucher exchange, thus the activity held by the business sector indirectly helps to promote green living among us. In contrast, the government only acts the supporting body behind the whole idea of the event held. The government is more committed in enforcing the environmental laws rather than to take an initiative and realistic action to improve the environment.

Besides, the business sector invests a lot of money and time in advertising and promoting the green practices among us. In fact, the government also does the advertisements through the electronic media such as television in order to grab the audience’s attention. However, the business sector advertisement is more appealing and eye-catching compared with that of the government one. For example, advertisement introduced by the business sector for the 3R (Reuse, Recycle and Reserve) slogan is more animated and lively with imaginative and inspirational 3R song as the background of its animation. The business sector releases the advertisements through the most well-like channel, for example, the Astro. On the contrary, the government introduced their advertisements though the least popular channel such as TV1, TV2 and TV3, and in two-dimensional form which is not demanding and least favourite by the consumers due to the fact that it is obsolete. However, even an advertisement is being introduced in the two-dimensional way, there is alternative which can be done to satisfy their vision, that is through the graphic designs. The consumers are prone to watch advertisements which are refreshing and interesting to them, and the message delivered should be impressive or like giving them a knock in the head. Example of the messages or slogans is “Let’s go green to get our globe clean.” Therefore, business sector successfully raised the consumers’ attention through their creative advertisements instead of the government.

As a conclusion, action speaks louder than word, apparently the business sector has significant influence and power in prompting and raising the public’s conscious in improving our environment. Therefore, the business sector plays a major part in implementing its commitments to conserve and preserve our environment in order to promise a better tomorrow.
